UNISON’s show of concern comes after the publication of Boorman report and an incident that occurred with Juliet Satterthwaite, a psychiatric nurse, who suffered severe facial scars as well as other injuries after she was attacked by a violent patient at St Nicholas Hospital in Gosforth in 2006. She was later compensated for her ordeal.
The attacker was a patient under observation, who had already assaulted an employee, and therefore needed to be attended to by at least two members of staff trained in controlling and restraining violent patients. However, owing to staff shortage, Juliet was posted on night duty and was looking after the patient along with an untrained agency worker.
In his fit of madness, the patient had Juliet in a headlock and pulled her earrings out. He dug his claws into her face and nose causing in deep scars. He also pulled her hair out before any one could come to her rescue. The agency staff could not help her when the patient attacked her. The two used the alarms but they did not work either.
Juliet was paid a compensation amount of £6,500 in an out-of-court settlement by Newcastle, North Tyneside and Northumberland Mental Health NHS Trust after it admitting negligence last week.
Karen Jennings, UNISON Head of Health, pointed out that what happened with Juliet was not an exception, and that such cases are rather frequent in the NHS, with the staff being at the receiving end all the time. She also urged the Trusts not to wait for the Boorman report and take immediate health and safety measures making sure that workers had access to quality occupational health care throughout the NHS.
