Managers: Super-Charge Your PR
Ain’t a gonna happen unless business, non-profit and
association managers, possibly like you, do something
positive about those important external audiences of
yours that most affect your operation. And then, as you
persuade those key outside folks to your way of thinking,
help move them to take actions that allow your department,
group, division or subsidiary to succeed.
Fortunately for all of us, good public relations planning
really CAN alter individual perception and lead to
changed behaviors among key outside audiences.
Why should you believe it? Because of this public
relations premise: people act on their own perception of
the facts before them, which leads to predictable
behaviors about which something can be done. When
we create, change or reinforce that opinion by reaching,
persuading and moving-to-desired-action the very
people whose behaviors affect the organization the most,
the public relations mission is accomplished.
Just look at the kind of reactions that can result:
customers starting to make repeat purchases; politicians
and legislators starting to view you as a key member of
the business, non-profit or association communities;
capital givers or specifying sources beginning to look
your way; prospects starting to work with you; fresh
proposals for strategic alliances and joint ventures;
welcome bounces in show room visits; membership
applications on the rise; and community leaders
beginning to seek you out.
But it doesn’t just happen, as I’m certain you already
suspect. Your public relations people really must be
on board this particular approach to PR. And
especially, they must buy into why it’s so important
to know how your outside audiences perceive your
operations, products or services. And do be sure they
accept the reality that negative perceptions almost
always lead to behaviors that can damage your
organization.
Now, how do you plan to monitor and gather
perceptions of your key external audiences? Why,
by questioning members of your most important
outside audiences. Meet with your public relations
people and review possible questions like these:
how much do you know about our organization?
Have you had prior contact with us and were you
pleased with the interchange? How much do you
know about our services or products and employees?
Have you experienced problems with our people or
procedures?
Hopefully it will not come as a surprise that your
PR people are already in the perception and behavior
business and can be of real use for the initial opinion
monitoring project. You can always use professional
survey firms, of course, but that can cost a bundle. So,
whether it’s your people or a survey firm who handles
the questioning, the objective is to identify untruths,
false assumptions, unfounded rumors, inaccuracies,
and misconceptions.
Soon you will have to decide which of the problems
outlined above (or others) becomes your corrective
public relations goal - clarify the misconception, spike
that rumor, correct the false assumption or fix a
variety of other possible inaccuracies?
At the same time you set your PR goal, you must select
the right strategy from the three choices available to you.
Change existing perception, create perception where
there may be none, or reinforce it. The right strategy will
show you how to reach that goal. Of course, picking the
wrong strategy will taste like peanut butter on a nice piece
of Nova Scotia salmon. So be sure your new strategy fits
comfortably with your new public relations goal. Obviously,
you wouldn’t want to select “change” when the facts dictate
a “reinforce” strategy.
At last we come to the “muscular” part of your public
relations effort — writing a persuasive message aimed at
members of your target audience. It’s always a severe test
to come up with action-forcing language that will help
persuade a target audience to your way of thinking.
It almost goes without saying that you must assign the task
to your best writer. What is required are words that are not
only compelling, persuasive and believable, but clear and
factual if they are to shift perception/opinion towards your
point of view and lead to the behaviors you desire.
Now comes one of the less pressuresome chores —
identifying the communications tactics needed to carry your
message to the attention of your target audience. Always
making certain that the tactics you select have a record of
reaching folks like your audience members, you have at
your disposal dozens of communications tactics ranging
from speeches, facility tours, emails and brochures to
consumer briefings, media interviews, newsletters, personal
meetings and many others.
Do not overlook the fact that the believability of your
message can be dependent on the credibility of its delivery
method. And that means you may wish to deliver it in
small getogether-like meetings and presentations rather
than through a higher-profile media announcement.
As initial impact of your communications tactics is felt,
you and your PR people will want to undertake a second
perception monitoring session with members of your
external audience. The same questions used in the benchmark
session can be used again. But now, you will be looking
very carefully for indications that the bad news perception
is moving in your direction.
By the way, take comfort in the fact that that your PR
program usually can be accelerated by adding more
communications tactics as well as increasing their frequencies.
To recap: I strongly advise you to remember this as a business,
non-profit or association manager: supercharging your
managerial public relations effort will depend heavily on
you doing something positive about those important external
audiences of yours that most affect your operation - positive
steps like those mentioned above. And as you persuade
those key outside folks to your way of thinking, you will
hopefully move them to take actions that allow your
department, group, division or subsidiary to succeed.

5 Personal Traits That are Holding You Back From Earning a Six Figure Income.

You might be all fired up within yourself with lots of motivation from others but deep inside you, you have doubts of your capabilities. You are insecure, shy, timid, and negative and swayed easily by others when they criticize your ideas and thoughts when expressed. You must master yourself by constantly reminding yourself that you are unique in this world and have a purpose and can do whatever set your mind to do. Nothing must get in the way to sway you away from your goals and ambitions. Be tough with yourself.
4. Lack of Persuasiveness, Tenacity, Discipline
Although you may have the talents, you lack the drive to stick to what you are doing and see it through. Some elements of doubt in Number 3 above get in the way and cloud your thinking. You must develop a disciplined mind and consciously make the effort to hone this skill. Meditation is a good tool to develop this.
5. Distrust in Others
When you are faced with situations, whether presented with an opportunity or just facing a situation, you have the tendency to be cynical or disbelieve the ideas or concepts presented to you. This could because you have developed this habit from childhood perhaps of the environment that surrounded you—what I mean here is that the physical as well as the emotional impact of those experiences can have a very adverse effect on your life as you grow older. You distrust others and by doing so you avoid new ideas and suggestions so you never move positively to become financially successfulor for anything –for that matter.
Learn How You Can Get Out Of This Time Warp and Succeed
But amazingly enough, these elements can work together fast to make you a lightening rod and move you in a positive enlightening and prosperous direction, There are two major ways this can occur:
a. When a dramatic event occurs in your life. The dramatic event forces you to readjust your life to a better one. Example; Wendy was 350 pounds heavy as she ate a lot of junk food. She is only 38 years old. But when her brother, age 32, died from overweight becasue of a bad diet like her, she quickly changed her diet and other personal habits. Martial Arts - Judo versus BJJ
This is one of the hottest topics up for debate in the martial arts community and quite frankly I don’t think either side understands the other’s point of view. The bulk of the issue stems from the many misconceptions of the two respective arts but more so the lack of understanding of Judo. It is funny that most people understand that BJJ was created when a Judoka taught a Brazilian the martial art of Judo but both sides fail to agree on how similar these martial arts are. If you take into account that Judo is one of the biggest sports in the world and is also recognized as an Olympic sport, you would wonder why it receives so much disdain. The average Judo club will charge around 25 dollars per month to join while the going rate for a BJJ school is 100 dollars or more. For this reason alone I think this topic needs some further investigating.
Like everything in our society, we view higher priced services as being of a better quality. Surely no car that costs a fraction of the price of another car can be even remotely comparable. BJJ costs more to take so it must be more effective. Just like the marketing exhibited in the car example martial arts often fall prey to these smoke screens. The fact is people are willing to pay more to take BJJ then they are to take Judo. The real question is why. When the UFC was created by the descendents of the creator of BJJ the world was about to witness one of the greatest infomercials they would ever see. Many people agree that the real reason this fighting organization was created was to bring attention to BJJ. Well it worked! A skinny BJJ fighter by the name of Royce Gracie defeated 4 other fighters from various other martial arts backgrounds, quite easily and showed the dominance of BJJ. Based on the momentum of Royce’s success his family began to open BJJ schools throughout America. The question that many people don’t ponder is what if a Judoka would have been invited to the inaugural event and did the same thing this BJJ practitioner did? It is not hard to figure out that Judo would have boomed even more so than it already has and could’ve demanded much more for its services.
Let us take a look at the many differences betwen the 2 martial arts. Although BJJ was spawned out of Judo it has adopted a completely different philosophy. Judo is a sport that focuses more on throws while still covering submission holds and ground fighting. If I were forced to give a percentage of each aspect I would say that its 50% throws, 25% submissions and 25% ground fighting. BJJ in comparison is 95% submissions and ground fighting with only 5% of the time allocated to throws. You may be wondering why there is such a discrepancy between the two martial arts. Simply put they’re both sports and their rules are quite different. In a judo match you are awarded points for throws and can even end a match with a perfect throw while you’re only allowed 30 seconds on the ground. BJJ on the other hand has an unlimited time on the ground and rewards its competitors for attempting to try various techniques while on the ground. As you can see from the way their respective competitions are formatted, the way each school is focused is a direct reflection of this.
The number one argument I always hear in support of BJJ is that whenever a Judoka and a BJJ practitioner fight, the BJJ fighter reigns supreme. They also claim that a Black belt in BJJ tends to be better with submissions and ground fighting then a black belt Judoka. What they fail to realize is that this is not a fair comparison. Rather then viewing it as a belt versus belt matter, why not look at it as a timing matter. The point I am trying to make is that it takes 3 years to obtain a black belt in Judo while it takes over 10 years to receive a black belt in BJJ. In Judo a black belt represents a student’s understanding and beginning of mastery while in BJJ a black belt represents a student’s mastery. A fair comparison would be between a Judo 4th dan black belt and a BJJ black belt because the time they have both spent in the respective sports would now be equal.
Although after reading through this article you may still be confused on which martial art is truly better you would have to admit you have a better general understanding of the two martial arts and that you fully understand how similar they are.
